Harvesting

This month South Preschool will dive into the fall harvest season. Grounding themselves in the geography of North America, they’ll look at the properties of corn, learning its parts, its life cycle, and plucking kernels off the cob. They’ll also examine the storing behaviors of animals like squirrels, raccoons, and chipmunks and study the history of the landing of the Mayflower.

How to 'fall back' with kids and not lose (too much) sleep

Next Sunday marks the end of Daylight Savings Time. This can throw your child's natural sleep rhythm off (as well as your own), so in order to prepare for the extra hour, check out these tips from Motherly.

  1. Shift your child's sleep schedule slightly in the days leading up to it

  2. Anticipate early rising

  3. Be mindful of exposure to sunlight and darkness

  4. Get enough sleep before the time change

  5. Be patient and try not to worry

Click here for the full article.

With all the focus on your kid's sleep, don't forget to take care of yourself, too! Make sure you're getting the rest you need as well, so you can be more emotionally available for your child during this time. And remember, these effects are short lived, so within a week or so, everything should be back to normal. Rest up, be patient, and good luck!

FALL HARVEST

For the month of November our theme will be fall harvest. We will learn about animals, food, and talk a little bit about the changing weather.

Our sensory bin will be filled with hard and soft animals, leaves, brown and red yarn, and utensils to practice the fine motor skills of grasping. We will have animals set out as a work for the infants to become familiar with and eventually practice naming. We will also have a food puzzle with pegs available for infants to practice their pincer grasp.

We will continue reading fall themed books and will add a song about apples and bananas to our song repertoire. We are so excited for this month!

WEEKLY FOCUS

Each week the infants teachers plan what the weekly focus will be. They do not need to guide infants on what to do with the focus work; the children can discover that on their own. A teacher's role is to observe and provide a demonstration when a child is developmentally ready to understand the purpose of a work.

November 12th – 15th

Sensory, mobile of fall leaves

November 18th – 22nd

It’s the beginning of the holiday season and your kids have a lot coming up in the afternoon.

This month they will start by going to the grocery store where they can buy some much needed supplies, help a customer or two, and buy flowers to decorate their house.

After buying all their food at the grocery story they will prepare it for a Thanksgiving dinner. They will set the table, cook their feast in the kitchen, and “eat” their splendor with their friends.

Soothing Your Toddler's Fears

Halloween brings up many emotions for young children. It can be fun, creative, and silly, but it can also be scary for some. Children often exhibit more fears during early childhood as their development in memory, expectations, and imagination increases.

As adults, we can gradually help children manage their emotional reactions to a variety of stimuli. It could be talking or drawing about what they’re afraid of, walking them through what to expect in an upcoming situation, acting out a situation using puppets, or reading books about their fear. It’s tempting to remove stressors from their lives, but in actuality, small bits of stress, with support and guidance, add coping strategies to their repertoire and aid the development of emotional regulation.

For tips on how to handle Halloween and how to soothe your child’s fears, even after toddlerhood, please read here.
