harvest; woodland animals

North Pre 1 Families,

This month is all about harvest! We are learning that harvesting means gathering ripe crops, and we continue to expand our knowledge of fall fruits & vegetables to talk about other veggies like squash, carrots, even grain. Our PFM outdoor garden is filled with delicious herbs that preschoolers are able to explore and we are also able to enjoy sensory materials such as beans, seeds, and rice in our own personal sensory bins. Shelves are filled with harvest-themed reading materials and our art projects reflect our current topic. North Pre 1 kids are so excited to talk about their favorite types of foods and vegetables - pumpkins are one of our very favorites, yum!

North Pre 2 Families,

Our North Pre 2 classroom theme for this month is woodland animals! This means we get to explore a wide array of animals including predators such as bears and foxes, smaller critters like chipmunks and racoons, and even insects like butterflies. We talk about what woodland creatures eat, draw beautiful pictures of what we learn, and have materials available such as coloring pages and vocabulary flash cards that allow us to dive deeper into our theme. Some of our classroom favorites are beavers - they build dams made of wood that provide protection, you know!

FALL HARVEST

For the month of November our theme will be fall harvest. We will learn about animals, food, and talk a little bit about the changing weather.

Our sensory bin will be filled with hard and soft animals, leaves, brown and red yarn, and utensils to practice the fine motor skills of grasping. Of course, each child will have their own sensory materials- either in a zip lock bag for younger infants or in their own small bin for older infants! We will have animals set out as a work for the infants to become familiar with and eventually practice naming. We will also have a food puzzle with pegs available for infants to practice their pincer grasp.

We will continue reading fall themed books and will add a song about apples and bananas to our song repertoire. We are so excited for this month!

Community Helpers

As we prepare for the season of Thanksgiving, we’re going to embrace the spirit of gratitude in the Toddler Room by learning about the people who serve our community on a day to day basis.

We’ll read books that teach us their identifying characteristics, match drivers to their work trucks, and build our own little town. On our walks around the city, we’ll use our knowledge base to recognize and acknowledge the people helping near us.

As we talk about the ways in which these people support us and the ecosystem we’re a part of, we’ll introduce the concept of a gratitude circle, in which the toddlers will learn how to give thanks and honor the bounty in their lives.

Important Dates:

November 11th: PFM Closed for Veteran's Day

Head of School Newsletter: November

PFM Families,

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and this just so happens to be one of our very favorite times of the year here at PFM.! We love learning about harvesting vegetables and talking about how special our families are to us. We get to share things that we are thankful for and this is such a joy to do with the children. The things they come up with are so honest and sincere. We are truly lucky to have this wonderful PFM community and never has it been more apparent than these last few months. We are truly thankful!

Have a wonderful month everyone!

South Preschool October

LEAVES

South class is discovering leaves in October. They have been investigating sizes, shapes, colors and textures of leaves on the playground and inside the classroom. Some children even brought us leaves from home! We have been looking at these through our magnifying glasses and making art projects with them. One of our favorite things was to make a poster with leaves glued on from smallest to largest. We are very proud of these. We have learned the names of different shapes of leaves as well as which leaves belong to which trees. We love being able to match real leaves with our metal inset shapes.

Spring

Hello Families, Happy March!

This month as a classroom we will focus on spring. Spring in the infant room means lots of flowers, spring-themed books and songs, and bright colors. We will continue learning the names of different colors and begin to add the names of flowers to our growing vocabulary.

Some classroom news for the month - we have added a brachiation bar to the corner of the classroom! Brachiation bars are beneficial gross motor tools that give the infants an opportunity to practice balance, therefore aiding in the refinement of the control and coordination of gross motor movements.

Frogs

Hello Toddler Families,

This month we’re taking our lessons from the transformative nature of frogs. Looking at their life cycles, we’ll compare their stages to the different phases of our lifetimes, talking about how we learn as we grow too! And just as the frog easily adapts to water to land, we’ll also focus on how to embrace the moments of transition in our lives and navigate with them grace and flexibility.

And because frogs are known for their distinctive voices, we’ll introduce the frog guiro rasp into our music area and listen to the beautiful sounds of this percussive instrument.

Happy hopping!
