Grace and Courtesy: Beyond Please and Thank you

Grace and courtesy lessons are an integral part of the Montessori curriculum and provide children with social skills they will utilize throughout their lifetime. The following article, by P Donahue Shortridge, explains how these skills can be taught in both the classroom and home.

A few weeks ago, I arrived at a hotel to check in, only to find that my room would not be ready for quite some time. There had been a pop concert nearby the night before, attended mostly by moms and their teenage daughters. Apparently, the moms spent their after-event time at the bar, while their teens proceeded to trash their hotel rooms, blast loud music, and run wild in the hallways until 3:00 a.m. The next morning, housekeepers were overwhelmed by a tsunami of debris: lipstick on mirrors, teepeed beds, and wet trash everywhere. As I sat in the lobby contemplating this uncivilized behavior, I asked myself, How does this happen?

Parents want children to be polite, kind, and civilized. But what does it take to foster that outcome? Mammals, especially humans, are social learners. We gain knowledge from our environment and from other people, especially from those whom we love. Unfortunately, we learn both antisocial as well as pro-social behaviors by watching others. So if there is anything you want your child to know how to do, or a way you want him or her to behave, you should first model it, then show him or her how to do it, offer lots of opportunities for practice, and finally, hold the child accountable.

First, modeling: In the early years of life, we learn mostly by taking in the sensorial impressions of the world around us. A series of neural connections helps us imprint that which we see. The child watches what other people do and attempts to do it too. Research has shown that mimicry increases pro-social behavior in very young children (Carpenter, Uebel & Tomasello, 2013). If you want your children to wait their turn to speak, do that yourself. If you want your children to stay at the table during dinner, turn off your cell phone and stay seated yourself.

Second, practice: Think about what you want your child to learn—everything from when and how to say “excuse me,” to carrying on a phone conversation with Grandma, to holding the door open for someone with an armload of packages, to conducting oneself at a restaurant, in a theater, on an airplane, and at a hotel. Take it slow; you will have many years to inculcate these habits. Start with simple daily activities: “In our family, when we need to sneeze, we sneeze into our sleeve. Watch me. Now it’s your turn.”

Other examples include: For a young child—pushing in one’s chair after getting up from the table. For an Elementary-age child—lessons on how we treat those different from us.

After you have modeled and practiced, hold your children accountable. If you use inductive statements, it will help the child discover for himself how to make the correction. Some examples: For young children—“When you go back to the table and push in your chair, then you may be excused.” For an Elementary-age child—“Before we go over to the neighbor’s house to apologize for that bullying incident, you’ll come up with how you will make amends, which, as you remember, is part of apologizing.”

Finally, remember that your children really do want to learn all this. It’s how they feel competent and socially adept.

Head of School Newsletter: December

In December, we have many festive outings planned for the children.  We will attend our first Tiny Tots show of the year at Benaroya Hall and walk to see the gingerbread houses (in our building this year!), the carousel, and the winter train at Macy’s.  We are also very excited for preschoolers to sing special holiday songs to parents on December 15th.

We welcomed a new friend, Jackson Talbert to our toddler room in mid-November and in December Anna joins the toddler room as well. Jane and Nadia have transitioned from our toddler room to South Preschool.

Our lovely Mimi has begun her maternity leave and will be gone until mid-February.  While Mimi is on maternity leave, Erika Arechiga will be trained to fill in as the preschool assistant in North class. Starlina will move from afternoon toddlers to afternoon preschool to fill Erika’s role.  You will also notice Brenda from the infant room helping in afternoon preschool as well.   I am so proud of how everyone has selflessly pitched in to sub as needed during this time of change.  We have a great team!

The parent education piece this month is about grace and courtesy.  Be sure to read the article under the Parent Education tab to learn more about how to implement these ideas into your home environment.  The kids love learning and practicing these social skills at school and I am sure it will be fun for them to practice at home, too.

I hope you have a wonderful month filled with family and fun!

Happy Winter Families!

This month we are lucky enough to have a gingerbread display in our building! We will take lots of building walks this month on the first floor to explore it. We also plan on visiting the Macy’s train display and the Westlake carousel. It is a nice chance to talk about the different lights and colors that we see during the walks each day. Having more opportunities to communicate with the babies is great! We strive to talk to them as much as we can, whether we are narrating our actions, or talking about what we see!

Dont Forget!

Thank you for filling out our the daily schedule each day. This is important as it helps us know when each child last ate and helps us plan naps and food throughout the day!

For days that are not too chilly or wet outside, a warm coat is needed in your child’s cubby.

Thank-you

This month...

In the spirit of our rapidly cooling weather, we will be looking at all things winter. We'll be spending time talking about snow, the differences of ice and water, and what kinds of things we might wear or do outside!

The child’s development follows a path of successive stages of independence, and our knowledge of this must guide us in our behaviour towards him. We have to help the child to act, will and think for himself. This is the art of serving the spirit, an art which can be practiced to perfection only when working among children.

Friday December 22nd-Monday January 1st: PFM closed for holiday break (back to school Tuesday January 2nd)

Welcome Winter!

As a child the winter holidays were spent with my grandparents in Connecticut. My favorite parts of the trip were when we took the train into New York City. I loved the whole experience of purchasing a ticket, having it stamped, riding the train and arriving somewhere special. This December we will study trains. We will learn the different parts of the train, different kinds of trains, stamp tickets and arrange different shaped tracks. With an already peaked interest in trains, I know this unit will be a favorite for many.

In addition to the train unit in our classroom will be getting ready for the winter holidays! Our practical life shelf will have works to help practice hanging ornaments, making orange and clove pomanders, and placing candles in a menorah. We will also celebrate with our holiday sing, making holiday gifts and even taking a walk to see the trains at Macy’s!

The essence of independence is to be able to do something for one’s self. Adults work to finish a task, but the child works in order to grow, and is working to create the adult, the person that is to be. Such experience is not just play... it is work he must do in order to grow up.

Happy Winter Families!

Throughout November we continued to work on our collage portraits. We finished adding our facial features as well as attached the silhouettes to our own individual canvases. As this is an extensive project, this month we will continue to work on our collage self-portraits! We will add yarn, fabric, and buttons to aid in expressing personality.

We have tailored our afternoon art program to fit the needs of the students. This will allow 3-4 children to work on their project at a time. Ms. Katie will be leading the projects for both classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 4-5pm in north preschool. As always, if you pick up your child during this time, please feel free to stop by and check on our progress---you might even get to see your little one in action!
