Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Throughout December we continued to work on our collage portraits! We discussed accessories and how they can aid in expressing our individual personalities. The first one we added is a natural one---hair! Using yarn, we observed how each of us is unique and can choose to express our characters through hair style choices via length, color, and texture.

For January...

we will take a break from this project for the first week, allowing us to create a winter scene for our upcoming dramatic play area. After it is completed, we will continue to work on our collage self-portraits, adding fabric and buttons for our clothing choice. As always, you’re all welcome to check out our progress from 4-5pm at the art table in North Preschool.

Happy New Year all!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break filled with family, food, and lots of love!

This month in our classroom we will be learning about the Arctic and Antarctic! We will learn about ways to get around on the ice, what type of clothes you would need, and what kinds of plants and animals live there.

In the zoology area we will talk about hibernation versus migration and adaptation, and in the science area

In the practical life area of the classroom we will be introduced to polishing…with the leaves of our plants looking so shiny from all of our leaf polishing practice, we are ready to move on to wood and metal polishing using all natural polishes and cotton balls! We will polish things all around the classroom to make our environment sparkle!

In the math area of the classroom we will explore temperature with some cool ‘glaciers’ and thermometers. We will also learn about the clock- we will learn about the parts of a clock, the numbers on the clock and how to tell what hour it is. We will even be creating our own clocks to explore with and take home!

Only poets feel the fascination of a tiny rivulet of water trickling over the pebbles as it is felt by the child, who grows enthusiastic over it, laughs, and wants to stop and touch it with his hand as if to caress it.

How to bring some Montessori into your home this month...

Have your child help around the house with polishing…

o Wood polishing: mix a tiny amount of olive oil with the juice from half a lemon in a spray bottle and have your child spray wooden surfaces and wipe with a clean washcloth.

o Mirror and metal polishing: place a small amount of white toothpaste into a small bowl and use a small wet cloth or napkin to cover the mirror or metal surface. Allow to dry and then wipe clean with a dry washcloth.

Head of School Newsletter: December

In December, we have many festive outings planned for the children.  We will attend our first Tiny Tots show of the year at Benaroya Hall and walk to see the gingerbread houses (in our building this year!), the carousel, and the winter train at Macy’s.  We are also very excited for preschoolers to sing special holiday songs to parents on December 15th.

We welcomed a new friend, Jackson Talbert to our toddler room in mid-November and in December Anna joins the toddler room as well. Jane and Nadia have transitioned from our toddler room to South Preschool.

Our lovely Mimi has begun her maternity leave and will be gone until mid-February.  While Mimi is on maternity leave, Erika Arechiga will be trained to fill in as the preschool assistant in North class. Starlina will move from afternoon toddlers to afternoon preschool to fill Erika’s role.  You will also notice Brenda from the infant room helping in afternoon preschool as well.   I am so proud of how everyone has selflessly pitched in to sub as needed during this time of change.  We have a great team!

The parent education piece this month is about grace and courtesy.  Be sure to read the article under the Parent Education tab to learn more about how to implement these ideas into your home environment.  The kids love learning and practicing these social skills at school and I am sure it will be fun for them to practice at home, too.

I hope you have a wonderful month filled with family and fun!

Happy Winter Families!

This month we are lucky enough to have a gingerbread display in our building! We will take lots of building walks this month on the first floor to explore it. We also plan on visiting the Macy’s train display and the Westlake carousel. It is a nice chance to talk about the different lights and colors that we see during the walks each day. Having more opportunities to communicate with the babies is great! We strive to talk to them as much as we can, whether we are narrating our actions, or talking about what we see!

Important dates this month

December 15th Holiday Sing-along 9:30am

Thank you for filling out our the daily schedule each day. This is important as it helps us know when each child last ate and helps us plan naps and food throughout the day!

For days that are not too chilly or wet outside, a warm coat is needed in your child’s cubby.

Thank-you

Welcome to December toddler families!

This month...

In the spirit of our rapidly cooling weather, we will be looking at all things winter. We'll be spending time talking about snow, the differences of ice and water, and what kinds of things we might wear or do outside!

The child’s development follows a path of successive stages of independence, and our knowledge of this must guide us in our behaviour towards him. We have to help the child to act, will and think for himself. This is the art of serving the spirit, an art which can be practiced to perfection only when working among children.
— Maria Montessori

Dates to remember:

Friday December 8th: Tiny Tots!

Friday December 15th: Holiday sing-a-long 9:30am

Friday December 22nd-Monday January 1st: PFM closed for holiday break (back to school Tuesday January 2nd)

Welcome Winter!

As a child the winter holidays were spent with my grandparents in Connecticut. My favorite parts of the trip were when we took the train into New York City. I loved the whole experience of purchasing a ticket, having it stamped, riding the train and arriving somewhere special. This December we will study trains. We will learn the different parts of the train, different kinds of trains, stamp tickets and arrange different shaped tracks. With an already peaked interest in trains, I know this unit will be a favorite for many.

In addition to the train unit in our classroom will be getting ready for the winter holidays! Our practical life shelf will have works to help practice hanging ornaments, making orange and clove pomanders, and placing candles in a menorah. We will also celebrate with our holiday sing, making holiday gifts and even taking a walk to see the trains at Macy’s!

The essence of independence is to be able to do something for one’s self. Adults work to finish a task, but the child works in order to grow, and is working to create the adult, the person that is to be. Such experience is not just play... it is work he must do in order to grow up.
— Maria Montessori
